What is dividend investing and how does it work?
Dividend investing focuses on selecting companies that consistently distribute dividends to shareholders. This approach can offer investors a regular income stream, helping to meet investors’ ongoing cash flow needs. In Canada, dividends from eligible corporations may benefit from favourable tax treatment.
How do I start with dividend investing?
Investors can begin dividend investing by purchasing individual stocks that regularly pay dividends or by considering dividend-focused ETFs. One such option is the iShares S&P/TSX Composite High Dividend Index ETF (XEI), which aims to provide monthly income by holding a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying Canadian companies.
What companies are included in XEI?
XEI holds a diversified portfolio of 50 to 75 Canadian companies that pay high dividend yields. Top holdings include well-known companies such as Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Enbridge, TC Energy, and Suncor Energy. These companies span sectors like financials, energy, utilities, and telecommunications.

How often does XEI pay dividends?

Is XEI suitable for a TFSA or RRSP?
Yes, XEI is eligible for both Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA) and Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP). Holding XEI in these accounts can help investors grow dividend income tax-free (TFSA) or defer taxes until retirement (RRSP).
