What is value investing?
Value investing is an investment strategy where you buy stocks (or other assets) that appear to be undervalued (i.e. selling at a discount price) compared to their intrinsic value. Famous champions of value investing include Benjamin Graham (who wrote The intelligent Investor) and Warren Buffet
Can a value stock also be a growth stock? For example, can a fast-growing tech stock be a value stock?
Value stocks can be in any sector – even tech – if they’re trading below their intrinsic value.
Do value investments pay dividends?
Yes, a value investment may pay dividends, if the company has decided to distribute profits in the form of dividends to the investors of the stock (rather than reinvest it in the company). RBC North American Value Fund - ETF Series distributes dividends annually to its investors.
Are value investments lower risk than growth?
Over long periods, value investing tends to have lower volatility than pure growth investing, but it still carries market risks and sometimes underperforms growth for extended periods.
